HOW DOES DEMOCRACY SURVIVE

Democracy is sustained not by development alone. Democracy survives when there is ample space for freedom, liberty, equality, justice and fraternity and when the democratic government is limited by rule of law and by supermacy of the Constitution.  The Constitution in her part draws her legitimacy and authority from the general people and thus democracy ultimately gets life from the people. And here when we talk about people, we talk about some homogeneous group of people in terms of equality. This underscores the importance of some certain form of equality or of absence of inequality. Social, political, gender, ethnic, racial, lingual, and there are many other  forms of inequality and among them economic inequality is of paramount concern. This economic inequality is fostered by many things and one among them is Corruption. Corruption corrodes the system of economic equality, prevents justice, promotes animosity among groups, limits the capacity to express freely and thus acts as termites of democracy. A process of development devoid of mechanisms and exercises  to prevent corruption can't ensure democracy .
