Majoritarianism in Democracy

 Majoritarianism in Democracy

Democracy by discussion is being replaced by democracy by ballot. Those in power and those who are aspiring power, both are not in arguments, discussions and compromises. Both parties are interested in monologues with their respective constituencies. They prefer to counter not in a face to face submissions , rather they are going to make their constituencies harder and inalienable, thus making their side unsuitable for arguments, discussions and compromises. Consequences are very obvious. Polarization of votes and even small issues of public interest are becoming non negotiable. Elections are being taught but elections and legislatures are now losing their significance of being platforms of discussions and compromised  solutions. Rather elections are becoming show of mere strength of numbers and each party is interested in establishing the hegemony of her stand not on the basis of public debate, discussions and arguments but on the strength of sheer number and this attitude is eroding the roots of democracy an giving the way to majoritarianism. This is happening in almost all democracies.
