IDENTITY AND DEMOCRACY
IDENTITY AND DEMOCRACY
As identity based politics takes away power from some sections in a democracy, democratic institutions are becoming unequal among themselves and also within themselves. Weakening of democratic institutions are playing roles in convincing people that democracy is root of all ills and only strong leaders are magic drug . This is causing shift of public opinion from democracy to totalitarianism. And where there is ample place for making identity based politics capable of appealing majority , there majoritarianism coupled with identity and strengthened by identity is hammering strong blows to democracy.
Now the question arises why identity is gaining ground. It's one explanation is this is that historically strong cultural groups are getting benefits more from modern economy and traditional strong cultural groups and getting more share in power which has led unprivileged and underprivileged sections also for more consciousness about their own fragile identity. The cultural consciousness intensified by economic inequality is pushing for authoritarian style of governance in the name of democracy itself.
